STANDING COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE TO CONDUCT HEARINGS IN GRAND BEND

OTTAWA – Paul Steckle, the Member of Parliament for Huron-Bruce today confirmed that the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food will conduct hearings in Grand Bend on March 11th, 2002.  At this venue, local groups such as the Federations of Agriculture, the Corn Producers, the Cattleman’s Association, the Grain Growers and CASCO will have the opportunity to provide their thought to the Committee.  Steckle stated,  “The agriculture industry in general is facing numerous serious challenges.  The Committee is seeking to determine how government can best assist the farming sector in strengthening itself in a manner that will allow it to most effectively grow while at the same time taking advantage of the benefits of expanding global and domestic markets.”

Witnesses are expected to give a five-minute statement that will be followed by thirty minutes of questioning from the all-party Committee.  As the time allotted for formal testimony is limited, the Committee Members will also accept written submissions from interested groups and individuals.  Results will be reported back to the House of Commons later this year.  Steckle concluded by saying, “This Committee process is being undertaken in conjunction with the Prime Minister’s agricultural task force.  It is my hope and expectation that, once completed, this exercise will yield results that will fortify the future of this essential Canadian industry.”
