STECKLE CALLS FOR A STANDING COMMITTEE REVIEW OF THE DAIRY TERMS ACT
OTTAWA - Paul Steckle, M.P. (Huron-Bruce) and Chair of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food today offered his support for a Standing Committee review of Bill C-340, the Dairy Terms Act. Steckle indicated his intentions on this matter by saying; "The Government of Canada and the Liberal Party of Canada have long been supporters of supply management. In keeping with that and, as a farmer myself, I firmly believe that the Standing Committee should examine the Dairy Terms Act, so that we can explore the merits and pitfalls of the legislation. To accomplish this, it would certainly be my intention to vote in favour of the bill when it next comes before the House of Commons." The Dairy Terms Act (Bill C-340) proposes to set standards for the use of food marketing terms that state or imply that the food is or is substantially based on dairy products. The enactment also provides for restrictions on the use of dairy terms with respect to traditional dairy products. However, it allows their use in certain cases where the product is not a pure dairy product or one with the minor addition of other products, but does not contain any ingredient that is a substitute for milk. -30- __________________________________
